In the Garden
Most vegetable seeds can be started indoors about six weeks before our last frost date, which is estimated to be mid-April. It’s safe to assume that date could vary by 15 days in either direction, so if you plant out anything that is not cold-hardy, stay on your toes and have frost protection in the form of Reemay row cover at the ready. If you don’t have any, a good heavy quilt will do in a pinch.
Plant seedlings that are cold-hardy and safe to plant out in March: brassicas (broccoli, collards, kale, turnips, cabbages), peas, radishes, carrots, lettuce, spinach, beets, onions, and potatoes.
Seeds to direct sow in the garden after the last frost (or plant starters safe to put out): tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, okra, squashes (summer and winter), peppers, eggplants, melons.
